Thought it was rich. Was making a ton of smoke!Ok. There has to be some starting point otherwise you wouldn't know whether to start at 2 turns or 5. As it turns out 7 turns out wouldn't have helped as the key seems to be in the idle mixture at hover RPM not the main needle to keep the engine well lubed. Not well documented at all. I've run OS 50's, 55's and 91 and never had this problem in the past with those engines.Their break in settings per the manual are right on. I did take the back plate off to inspect and everything looked good before I ran it.I didn't X-Ray it for defects and stress cracks though.:-) Sorry if I sound aggravated tonight but was trying to get a little more HP for the weekend and all I ended up with was burning $229 w/ nothing more than about 10 seconds in the air. My engine looked just like the pictures posted earlier after the flight. Bushing gone from the connecting rod.Sounds like either bad instructions or a defect or maybe some of both? I have to wonder if these settings are so rich that they are hydro-locking! On stock settings it is so rich in the mid range that the fuel can't atomize and it seems as though it is lean when it comes down from a punch out because the liquid fuel can not burn! TMoore, Have you run the 56 at close to sea level on 30% with no added shims? I run the shims and the motor delivers very good power with my favorite plug for the redlines, The McCoy MC8! If I can get more power with better squish clearance then the OS55 is going to look pretty lame! Recover from what? I have no problems with my 56, It's stronger than the OS55 I gave to a friend! You will have to get your throttle curve close to 50% and perhaps even less at hover or you will never get the mid range right! My throttle curve is P-L 0 0 P-1 25 33 P-2 50 40 P-3 75 50 P-4 87 60 P-H 100 100 This is for hover at 3/4 stick with a linear pitch curve. If your throttle is higher than 50% at hover it will take for ever to find the correct balance and you will not be able to assess the mid range mixture by hovering as per the instructions! Better luck with my second Redline 56Well. They certainly didn't produce an accurate manual. I have my second engine installed and the first two tanks through it. In order for it to be rich enough I had to turn the HS needle out 4.5 turns from closed not the 3 the manual suggests and had to turn the LS mixture 1.5 turns out from flush which the manual says is already set at the factory and should only be changed in 1/8 turn increments. Following their instructions resulted in blown engine. Now I can begin leaning out and breaking in. I'll be out of town next week so week after I'll get back to breaking in the engine. Looking forward to it as my Redline 53 was almost as strong as the OS 55 so I have high hopes for the 56! Just wish the manual would have provided a better starting point. Not quite the right conclusionAnd no. ![]() I did not take the screw out or remove the barrel however neither are there now so there is clearly some other way for this to happen! Maybe they forgot the green loctite at the factory? Nice of you to suggest it being my fault without having all the facts! Thanks for your help but I've already installed a new OS55HZ and its running just fine! I'll mess with the Redline's on the bench and see if I can get one to work but not going to worry about it much more. I've seen two of these engines and both had major flaws from the factory and Great Planes was no help so I'm not impressed with Thunder Tiger at all right now. Its a shame but oh well. I just want others to know of my experience. ![]() 4th tank into breakin' in my RL56 + 56 High Flow with 20/20 oil. Idle needle is flat with carb body and high needle is 2 3/4 from fully closed. Can't pick up warm or cold at back plate and running clear 2 stroke at 14.5K and 19K with good smoke trail. I always run my engine luke warm to touch breakin' in or not just more land and check during break-in.
